Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a coin a "treasure coin"?

Treasure coins are historic coins often recovered from shipwrecks, sunken fleets, or other archaeological finds. Many of our coins come from notable shipwrecks such as the Atocha or the 1715 Fleet and are certified for authenticity, age, and origin. These coins are not only rare but also carry incredible historical significance.

Are your shipwreck coins real?

Yes, absolutely. All our shipwreck coins are 100% authentic and recovered from verified historical shipwrecks. Each coin comes with professional certification from leading grading services like NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) or PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), often with accompanying documentation detailing the shipwreck and provenance.

How do I know if a coin is authentic?

Every coin we sell is carefully authenticated and graded by industry experts and certified by trusted third-party services such as NGC or PCGS. We also provide full transparency in coin descriptions and certificates of authenticity when available.

Can I visit your physical store?

Yes! We welcome you to visit our showroom in Largo, Florida. Treasure Coins is operated by Belleair Coins, Gold & Diamonds, and you can view select coins in person, speak with our experts, or request appraisals.

Are treasure coins a good investment?

While we can’t offer financial advice, many collectors and investors view treasure coins and rare numismatics as a tangible store of value, especially when authenticated and preserved. Their rarity and historical appeal often make them desirable assets. As with all investments, we encourage doing research or consulting a financial advisor.

What's the difference between graded and ungraded coins?

Graded coins are professionally authenticated and given a condition rating (or "grade") by third-party services like NGC or PCGS. This grade helps establish a coin’s value, rarity, and desirability. Ungraded coins are sold “as-is” and may vary in condition — great for beginner collectors or those who want affordable pieces of history.

What does “NGC” or “PCGS” mean?

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) and PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) are the two most trusted coin grading companies in the world. They assess the condition, authenticity, and rarity of coins, and their certifications add significant value and peace of mind to your purchase.

How should I store or display my coins?

For long-term preservation, keep coins in their original holders or certified slabs. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Avoid touching coins with bare hands — natural oils can cause damage. We also offer protective cases and display boxes for showcasing your treasures.

Do you sell coin accessories or display cases?

Yes, we offer a selection of coin holders, slabs, protective cases, and display boxes in-store. If you're purchasing a gift or building a collection, we can help you choose the right accessories.

Are all your coins from shipwrecks?

Not all. While many of our featured items are genuine shipwreck finds, we also carry rare coins from ancient civilizations, early U.S. and world coins, certified bullion, and modern collector pieces. Our inventory blends history, rarity, and value.

Do you carry gold or silver bullion?

Yes. We stock a wide range of gold, silver, and platinum bullion products including bars, rounds, and government-issued coins like the American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, and more. Great for both collectors and investors.

Do you offer gift cards or gift packaging?

At this time, we do not offer digital gift cards online, but you can request a custom invoice or purchase one in-store. We also provide elegant gift packaging upon request — just let us know at checkout!

Can I request a specific type of coin or shipwreck?

Definitely. We often source rare items upon request. If you’re looking for something specific — a coin from a particular wreck, year, or mint — contact us and we’ll do our best to track it down through our expert network.

What’s the story behind the 1715 Fleet?

The 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet was a convoy of ships carrying gold and silver from the New World to Spain. It was destroyed by a hurricane off the coast of Florida. Many of the coins we carry were recovered from this historic wreck and are accompanied by certificates verifying their origin.
